let me bring you to where two roads meet
U.S. 'slap' infuriates CanadaAlright, enough is enough. I haven't followed this super-closely, but over the years I've heard enough about it. The Americans have been making Canadian industry pay sizeable tarriffs on softwood lumber. For years now. Amounting to BILLIONS of dollars paid out. So, being the reasonable people that we are, we have diligently proceeded with court challenge after court challenge,
after court challenge in an attempt to demonstrate that, under NAFTA, these import duties are bogus. And what does the court find?
That we're right!
But the United States says that the NAFTA ruling is inconsequential and that it has no intention of scrapping duties on Canadian softwood that exceed 20 per cent for some companies today, or refunding the $5-billion in levies collected since 2002.
"Infuriate" is the right word. The Americans run around doing whatever the heck they want to in a lot of the world, but bringing it to our doorstep is about as insulting as you could get as a "friendly neighbour".
